Components of Hydroelectric Power Plants:

Image
Components of Hydroelectric Power Plants: Different references has been taken from devighat hydropower plant -nuwakot, Nepal Dam The dam is the most important component of a hydroelectric power plant. The dam is built on a large river that has an abundant quantity of water throughout the year. It should be built at a location where the height of the river is sufficient to get the maximum possible potential energy from water. Dams are individually unique structures, and dam construction represents the biggest structures in basic infrastructure in all countries .   Water Reservoir The water reservoir is the place behind the dam where water is stored. The water in the reservoir is located higher than the rest of the dam structure. The height of water in the reservoir decides how much potential energy the water possesses. The higher the height of water, the more its potential energy. The high position of water ...

Classification of hydropower on different basis

Image
Hydropower can be classified into different types, according to different bases.   According to  the  availability of head   ●         Low head power plants (<30m) ●         Medium head power plants (30-300 m) ●         High head power plants (>300 m)   According to capacity   ●         Large (> 100 MW) ●         Medium (10 – 100 MW) ●         Small (1 MW– 10 MW) ●         Mini (100 kW – 1 MW) ●         Micro (5 – 100 kW) ●         Pico (< 5 According to  the  nature of Flow regulation   ●      ...

Hydropower energy : How does it works?

Image
Hydropower is a renewable source of energy, where electricity is generated by   fast-flowing   water using hydraulic machines. Different types of turbines are used to convert the potential and kinetic energy of water into mechanical and finally into electrical energy by using generators. Today Hydropower supplies 20 % of energy demand worldwide and it prevents the burning of 22 billion gallons of oil or 120 million tons of coal each year (A. DEMIRBAS, 2007).     Energy conversion The goal of HEPP is to extract energy from water flowing under pressure. Water possesses both kinetic and potential energy is used to generate electricity. The difference in water level between two locations, known as the Head, creates potential energy. The output from a hydropower plant is the function of the net head, available discharge, and unit efficiency factor (Suraj Dahal, 2013).   Pros of hydropower energy Hydropower has long ...

Solar water Pumping

Image
What is solar water pumping? The lack of sufficient infrastructure and reliable sources of electrical energy in Nepal's rural areas has resulted in several quality-of-life problems. For example, locals walk for an extended period to get water to complete household tasks because their villages are far from water sources and at much higher altitudes. Installing two water tanks, one near the water source to collect water from its running start and the other near the settlement at a higher height with the appropriate head, will solve the problem. The water will then be lifted from the lower tank to the top using high-efficiency solar DC or AC water pumps. Standard pipes are used to distribute the water collected in the higher tank . Advantages of solar water pumping: Energy resource is almost universally available as their primary source is the sun A high correlation between energy available and water needs Low environmental impact and reliable   Fuel cost is...
